Open source also offers genuine flexibility that proprietary software often can’t match. If a piece of open source software doesn’t quite do what you need, you or a hired developer can actually modify it directly, rather than being stuck waiting for a feature request to make it onto some company’s product roadmap, if it ever does at all.

The Real Advantages of Proprietary Software

Proprietary software’s biggest advantage is usually polish and support. Because a dedicated company controls development, proprietary products often have more consistent, professionally designed user interfaces, more reliable customer support channels, and clearer accountability when something goes wrong — you know exactly who to contact, and there’s typically a formal support structure in place, unlike a lot of open source projects that rely heavily on volunteer maintainers and community forums.

Proprietary software also often integrates more seamlessly within a specific ecosystem, since companies have strong incentives to make their various products work smoothly together, whereas open source tools built by different, independent communities don’t always integrate as cleanly out of the box.

The Support Question Is More Nuanced Than It Sounds

It’s worth pushing back a little on the common assumption that proprietary software always means better support. Some major open source projects, particularly those backed by large companies or foundations, have extremely active communities and professional support options available, sometimes rivaling or exceeding what you’d get from a smaller proprietary vendor. Conversely, some proprietary software from smaller companies has notoriously poor support. For businesses that need guaranteed support, specific compliance certifications, or highly polished, industry-specific tools, proprietary software often remains the more practical, lower-risk choice, even with the added cost.

A lot of organizations, in practice, land on a hybrid approach — using open source tools where the community and maturity are strong, and proprietary software where specialized support, compliance, or polish genuinely matter more than cost savings.

It’s also worth knowing that the line between open source and proprietary has blurred somewhat over the years. Many companies now offer an “open core” model — a genuinely open source base product, with additional premium features, support, or cloud hosting sold as a proprietary add-on. This hybrid approach lets companies benefit from open source community goodwill and contributions while still building a sustainable, profitable business around the software.
